This document summarises the approach taken for the Surrey County Age Group Championships. It is based on the rules and definitions included in the Handbook which is amended annually by the ACM in December. Table of Contents TOC \o "3-3" \h \z HYPERLINK \l "_Toc254994786" A. Finals PAGEREF _Toc254994794 \h 2 Points Systems Used We use two points systems: Standard Points FINA Points Standard Points are awarded on the basis of 8 for 1st, 7 for 2nd and so on with 1 point being awarded for 8th place. FINA points are awarded for each swim for those swimmers who are in the British Age Groups (9 to 13 for Girls and 9 to 14 for Boys). Meet Event Age Groups The age groups for each event in the meet are shown in the Handbook. These age groups are the ones used for: Entry into the competition Award of standard points The qualifying times for entry into the competition are set for these age groups and Standard Points are only awarded if these qualifying times are swum in the competition. All swimmers in an Event Age Group will be grouped together and Standard Points will be awarded as set out in A2 above within that Event Age Group. By way of an example, if 16 & Over was a single Event Age Group for a particular event then all the swimmers aged 16 & Over would be grouped together when considering who came 1st, 2nd and so on. British Age Group Categories The British Age Groups are 9 to 13 for Girls and 9 to 14 for Boys. British Age Group Categories (BAGCATs) are determined by British Swimming and are explained in detail on their website and in their Long Term Athlete Development plan. In summary there are five categories: Sprints (50m) 100s (not a category for 9 and 10 year old girls or 9 to 11 year old boys) Form (200m in Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly) IM (100m, 200m, 400m) Long Free (200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m) Each swimmer will be awarded FINA points for each swim completed that meets the qualifying time and for which they are not disqualified. For each swimmer the highest score in each category will be added together and the winner in each British Age Group will be the swimmer with the highest aggregate in their age group. Age Groups above the British Age Groups The awards to age groups above the British Age Groups will be determined using Standard Points. The Handbook sets out the age groups that will be awarded medals during the competition for each event. No aggregate awards are made for age groups above the British Age Groups. The George Tinlin Trophy The George Tinlin Trophy is awarded to the team with the highest aggregate of Standard Points awarded to their swimmers in the age groups 9 to 16 for both individual and Junior relay events. The Standard Points are awarded based on the Meet Event Age Groups. By way of an example, if the top 16 year old boy came 4th in the 16 & Over age group of the 400m Freestyle he would earn 5 points towards his teams aggregate for the Tinlin Trophy. The Jubilee and Coronation Cups The Jubilee and Coronation Cups are awarded to the first and second placed team with the highest aggregate of Standard Points awarded to their female swimmers for individual events only. The Standard Points are awarded based on the Junior, Senior or Open Age groups for each event as set out in the Handbook. The 400m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle and the 400m IM have only an Open Age group. All other events have a Junior and Senior Age Group. By way of example, if the top 14 year old girl came 3rd in the 200m Freestyle Junior Age Group (15 & Under) she would earn 6 points towards her teams aggregate for the Jubilee and Coronation Cups. She would also earn 8 points towards her teams aggregate for the Tinlin Trophy. The St James Trophy and the Shand Millennium Shield The St James Trophy and the Shand Millennium Shield are awarded to the first and second placed team with the highest aggregate of Standard Points awarded to their male swimmers for individual events only. The Standard Points are awarded based on the Junior, Senior or Open Age groups for each event as set out in the Handbook. The 400m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle and the 400m IM have only an Open Age group. All other events have a Junior and Senior Age Group. By way of example, if the top 14 year old boy came 8th in the 400m Freestyle Open Age Group he would earn 1 point towards his teams aggregate for the St James Trophy and the Shand Millennium Shield. He would also earn 8 points towards his teams aggregate for the Tinlin Trophy. The Medal Table The Medal Table is calculated by aggregating the number of medals awarded for each event based on the Age Groups receiving medals. This year we are awarding medals to age groups 9 through 16 & Over. Finals This year we are running finals for the 100m and 50m events by way of a trial. The Handbook states that all events will be Heat Declared Winners so all Trophy points and FINA points for the BAG Categories will continue to be determined from the placing and time swum in the heats respectively. The finals this year will be used to determine the award of medals and ribbons.
